In May 2001 I took a dream holiday to Alaska. It was the end of winter and the snow, sometimes four metre drifts, were starting to melt away. The landscape being revealed was frozen and starved of sunlight after a winter of almost complete darkness. Walking along I glimpsed a small flash of colour – two perfect purple buds coming out of the otherwise, brown ground. The gardeners will recognise these as Crocus. I was struck by them then as I am now as a symbol of growth and change. Now as I journey from employment into private practice, the buds have more points of significance such as how I change and grow in parallel with clients.
Many clients, especially those suffering depression, have described their world to me as ‘grey’ or ‘colourless and ‘dark’. As the depression lifts, they say ‘it's getting lighter’ and describe colours. The two buds in the logo also remind me of an adage from my childhood, ‘The bigger ones are supposed to help the littler ones’ but, as the little ones remind us, ’they can walk by themselves’. As a psychologist, I take the view that people can walk by themselves but sometimes need help with the obstacles.
